Production, Distribution, Marketing And Exhibition
Production
Before carrying out the actual production of the movie the film has to be carefully planned and pre-visualized, a storyboard may be created so it is easier for the director as and illustrators picture how to movie should be and also so there is a blueprint of the shot sequences. Financing is also a big part of production and entails a film budget to outline everything they would need to spend money on and insurance to protect the movie in case of accidents. A crew is obviously needed to help in the film making process, the size of the crew depends of the size of the movie, whether it's a big budget Hollywood film that would need hundreds of crew members or an independent film which may only need 8 or 9 people ( if that). During the production process the team would also handle the casting, sets and locations and wardrobe before filming. After filming the shots taken are put together by a video/film editor, during which they would add music, sound effects and/or visual effects.
Distribution
The movie can be released to the public via movie theatre distribution, straight-to-video release or film festivals which are normally a test run for the movie and if it is a positive response by the public it may be distributed to the theatres as well.
Marketing
This is the process in which the film is released to the public which normally includes movie posters, movie trailers which show small bits of the movie all this and more involve the movie being advertising and promoted, some methods of marketing the movie might be through the movie's website and social networking sites.
For example movies such as Think Like a Man have used social networking sites such as Twitter to promote the movie with their "battles of the sexes" challenge which required fans to use the hash tag #GGActLikeALady or #GGThinkLikeAMan. They have shown it to be advantageous as the movie has earned $96,070,507 in the box office. Common ways that films are released are via launch party, interviews with the press, and film festival screenings which are more popular in the independent film industry.
Exhibition
Although the most common way of exhibition is through the cinema it is started to lose popularity as now only 4% of film viewing is in the cinema and more people are beginning to use the Internet for film viewing with increasing amounts of pirated films.
